About David Glowasky the Flamin’ Fiddler
Welcome to my life long love affair with Music
David is a native Albertan born in Spirit River, a little prairie town in the northern Peace River district. At a very early age he had the opportunity to listen to his family play old time music on the farm and he was hooked. After moving to Edmonton, David started taking classical violin lessons from Ranald Shean, all the while loving the down home music as well. After participating for many years at the Provincial Music Workshops, David decided to move to Calgary and further his studies with Dr. Lise Elson. She was influential in getting him an audition with the Calgary Philharmonic and David played as a per service player while completing his studies. While attending class David met some fellow students that played folk music, specifically bluegrass and joined the band to play folk clubs and local watering holes around Calgary. This led to being introduced to a country band that had been involved with promotion activities with the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede. Through his involvement with various Stampede Committees including the Grey Cup Committee, David has loved to promote Calgary throughout Canada and Europe, and has had a lasting friendship with many of these volunteers throughout the years.
David was involved with providing entertainment at the Calgary Flames home games and for four years delighted the fans as ‘The Flamin’ Fiddler’ with toe-tapping fiddle tunes and fun alongside the mascot ‘Harvey the Hound’
After playing with Joyce Smith and meeting many of Alberta’s touring musicians David played for two years on the TV show Number One West out of Prince Albert playing twin fiddles with the leader of Prairie Fire, Brian Sklar.
Taking time to teach David has had many fine violin students that have benefited from his expertise in many genres of music.
